The National Weather Service has issued advisories for the Atlantic on Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Helene, and Tropical Storm Isaac. A state of emergency and mandatory evacuations have been ordered in the Carolinas, and a state of emergency has been ordered in D.C. The North Carolina REALTORS® have canceled the State of Real Estate and XCHANGE ’18 Convention & Expo for 2018 (no updates as of time of publishing for the South Carolina REALTORS® Annual Conference and Expo, or the Virginia Association of REALTORS® Annual Conference and Expo). The government has suggestions for prepping for an evacuation, what to do as you evacuate, and after an evacuation. In the case of a hurricane, such as this, please see what you have time to do. We have gathered disaster relief resources to help brokers with the aftermath, while those in the path of the storm do what they can before evacuating or bracing themselves for the oncoming storm.

NAR has compiled a list of resources from the federal government on natural disasters. The NAR Legal Affairs team has also identified five areas that you will want to address to help your clients through a real estate transaction during disaster recovery. Our Window to the Law series includes a video on disaster guidance intended to instruct you about how to help your clients in the aftermath of a natural disaster.

The library also has eBooks on the topic such as Leading People Through Disasters, Disaster Management and Preparedness, and Contingency Planning and Disaster Recovery: A Small Business Guide.

The REALTORS® Relief Foundation is a resource for housing-related assistance to victims of disaster. Donate if you can, or call your state REALTORS® association if you are in need of assistance.
