HOA Forcing Us Out

 In RealEstate

After years of saving, my wife and I finally purchased our dream home (Put $100k down 20%). The home, by most people’s standards, was a fixer upper. The purchase left us with about $100k for renovations, to which I’ve completed on my own for the most part. We have burned through our reno money in just under a year, beautifying the home (probably one of it not the most up to date in the neighborhood at this point).

All of that said.. we just received demands from the HOA totaling $50k+ (Must renew overgrown landscape, replace driveway & repair section of “discolored” roofing). They are providing 90 days before abating the work.

Im at a loss, we really can’t afford the repairs at this point. We could sell & take profit from our progress with the house, but we’ll be destroyed with short term cap gains taxes. Not to mention finding another place that’s reasonable in this market is exhausting to think about.. I really don’t understand how they allowed the prior owners to sell in its current state without giving us (buyers) a notice of demands. It feels like we were baited into a lose lose situation..
