House nightmare

 In RealEstate

What would make you walk away from a house? We’ve walked away from two and I’m beginning to feel like we’re the problem and I’m thoroughly devastated and embarrassed. The first house was represented to us as great roof- just a few tiles need replacing. When we walked it in smelled like dog. I assumed I just needed to refinish the floors and paint. But then inspection showed rotting windows, rotting roof, dog urination all of the house, mold etc. Seller wanted more money to fix issues and the price was already 800 so we walked. Second home smelled musty but looked beautiful. Well the inspection showed a water leak in the crawl space under a kitchen addition that was shooting up at the joists. Realtor said oh no but deal. inspection showed foundation was good but there were structural changes happening to the two additions they had on because all of the downspouts- and there a many- it’s a BIG house- were against foundation and going right into soil. Water was coming in from everywhere. We told our realtor we were going to ask them to address damages brought on from the water. She flipped out! You can’t even get into 70% of the leaking crawl space without moving a piece of ductwork. Well if you’re 30% in and there’s already a substantial leak then I want to see what’s happening in the entire space so I don’t have a big surprise and have to rip up the entire kitchen floors. We’re already needing to replace leaky skylights, celler doors, down spouts, dig trenches. The smell was mold- lots and lots of mold. Oh and termites. So we walked. Our realtor was “so angry because we expect perfection and she’s exhausted”. House was 900. So for homebuyers what came up in your inspection? I should probably post this in the ‘am I the asshole thread’ but I’m so sad I can’t handle a bunch of yes you ares. I don’t expect perfection but can I get something not rotting? At least for this price?
